Conclusion
"Anyone can, at any time, become disabled, or develop a physical or mental impairment. Perhaps people's need to distance themselves from this harsh reality makes it convenient to rely on received negative attitudes and historical stereotypes of disability. These stereotypical images are less troubling than accepting the individuality, the joy, the pain, the appearance, behaviour and the rights of disabled people." - British Film Institute on Disabling Imagery |
For thousands of years, humanity has distanced itself from the disabled, in a desperate reaction to avoid its own frailty and mortality. Though the United States has largely reformed this injustice with the revolutionary ADA, the act hasn't solved all of America's discriminatory problems, nor has it appeased all businesses and educators. |
The American people have set themselves on the path of dueling disability discrimination, and are ready to reform the lives of people with disabilities far into the future.
- National Down Syndrome Congress, 2010
"The ADA is only the beginning. It is not a solution. Rather, it is an essential foundation on which solutions will be constructed."
- Justin Dart, the "ADA Man"
